I’ve seen a few Transformers costumes, and none of them really capture the true essence of sexy Optimus Prime.
This is the first of three costume ideas I’ve had (just in time for next Halloween).

Kind of a re-issue this week. All of these little figures have been posted before, but I wanted to have them in a static display instead of lying loose all over the place.
A long time ago I constructed an Optimus Prime papercraft designed by Mark Leggett (I can’t seem to find his website anymore) that was able to change from the robot form to a truck (kinda). I thought it was Awesome. I’ve been waiting for his version of Megatron, but it never happened. So, I had to do one myself.
The template is the same as Mark’s, so I don’t take any credit for that, and the face & body art is from this site:

The gun mode and attachments were all my design, though.
The official transforming robot of the LDS church (not really.)
I grew up in Salt Lake City (and was a Mormon) and I passed by this building almost every day. I always thought it was a very impressive structure.
When the Transformers cartoon started back in 1984, I figured I could design my own robots (like everyone else.) I came up with over 200 designs over the years. Some of them pretty clever, some not so much. One of my favorite ideas was this one. The temple is just perfect for the robot treatment.
I could never find a little plastic model to cut up and robot-ize, so I tried making my own wooden model. This didn’t work out too well. So I finally settled for a papercraft model. I couldn’t find a papercraft version of it, so I made my own from pictures. This is a non-transforming model, being so small, but I will some day build a larger scale, fully functional version. I have all the swivels and hinges mapped out (in my head), it’s just a matter of sitting down and doing it.
Someday.
I had a lot of foam left over from my last foam-related project, so I decided to do a TF theme. I came across this picture:
seanrm.deviantart.com/art/Constructicons-78793421
And I thought it was awesome, so I did a foam version.
The foam kind of brings out the 3-D aspect. Makes it kinda cooler (about 20% cooler.)
I’m not sure exactly how I got into this foam-sheet thing, but here is the result. I started off with just a regular Stormtrooper face, but decided it wasn’t quite original enough. Then I thought, how about half a trooper? And the rest fell into place.
I tried to pick the most iconic images from the shows that I could think of:
The Transformers is, of course Optimus Prime and Megatron
G.I.Joe has Snake Eyes vs Storm Shadow
Star Wars has a rebel pilot and a Stormtrooper
and finally, Star Trek (I tried to make Kirk’s face, but couldn’t quite get it right) is the Enterprise and a Klingon Bird of Prey
I have a lot of foam sheets left over, so I might continue this theme at some point. Doctor Who, Alien vs Predator and Kiss comes to mind.
Also, I don’t normally post anyone else’s art here, but my daughter joined me in the foam-sheet crafting and created Mario and Luigi from the Super Mario Bros games. For as young as she is, I think they turned out pretty good.
In a few more years, she will be making my stuff look amateur (which I guess it actually is, but oh well.)
When Micro Machines first came out, I thought it would be a great idea for a line of Transformers. They eventually did something along those lines with Micro Masters, but they weren’t quite the same scale. Anyway, before the “official” toys came out, I decided to make my own. I got a set of Micro Machines (set number 10, the Aircraft II set), cut them up and fastened them together in what, at the time, was a logical manner. I had limited access to tiny hinges, drills and stuff, so I had to make do with what I could find.
I know this was the 10th set because I had drawn up a design for each set that Galoob had put out at the time. I named each group with the letter of the alphabet that the set represented. The 10th set should start with the 10th letter of the alphabet. It seemed clever at the time.
These robots are called:
Jack-knife
Jettison
Jinx
Jolt
Juggernaut
I even wrote up a set of Tech-Specs for the set.
I might have gotten a few of the nomenclatures wrong, but there was no internet at the time to look things up.
I started a second set of Micro-Formers with the 8th set, which was the Off-Road pack (letter H). The first was Hardball
He was the only one i finished, though. I have detailed plans for the rest of the ‘H’ set, plus dozens of others. But these are the only ones I actually created.
This week’s project was originally an Easter egg toy with a spinning bunny face on it. I painted it grey, pasted some Quintesson faces on it, added some tentacles and tadaa: a Quintesson toy with push-button face-changing action. The only trouble with it is that there are only four face positions, so it’s not technically a Quint, but I’m sure I could come up with some tragic back-story for this lonely character. A solitary four-faced Quint among the five-faced majority. Oh, so sad, isn’t it?
By the way, the missing face is Bitterness. It seemed appropriate somehow.
